I've just spent two enjoyable nights with an extremely talented and internationally acclaimed artist, Des Spencer. He owns two galleries, one at the Sheraton Mirage, Port Douglas and the other at Marina Mirage on the Gold Coast. His work is also exhibited and sold in a number of galleries throughout Australia and the USA. Now let me tell you a little bit about Des. As a child he used to sit with a mate from school on a couple of big
boulders by the river and tell his friend that when he grew up he was going to be a millionaire. His friend's response was "Des you're a dreamer". Now to a kid that sort of statement may be seen as derogatory and intimidating, but Des wasn't phased. He knew what he wanted to achieve and he was determined to succeed.

He recalled how when he was in his early twenties and driving trucks for a living, while wide awake he would often dream about achieving his goals. There were times that he would find himself miles down the road past his turnoff, due to his daydreaming. This infuriated his employer. The fact was Des was a dreamer and has since seen those dreams materialise in his life and business.

Anyway before I tell you more about Des, let me tell you a little about how I met Him. As a connoiseur of fine art I make a point to check out art galleries wherever and whenever I can. On a recent visit to Marina Mirage on the Gold Coast, I noticed Des' paintings. Both my wife and myself were impressed with his "happy" style of painting. To put it in some sort of category I would call it 'modern impressionism'. While we were looking at
his work, the attendant advised us that Des would be spending the next four days painting at the Sheraton Mirage in resort in the evenings. As I personally have a desire to paint, I thought to myself, "I'm going to go and watch this man work and learn from him".

So that's what I did. I took my whole family along to the Sheraton and for the next couple of hours we watched Des transform a plain white board into a beautiful work of art. He used acrylic paints and painted this particular work with only his fingers, and an artist's trowel, with not a paintbrush in
sight.

What I got out of the demonstration was more than simply a lesson in painting. As we conversed, while Des was working, I discovered that I was hearing some of the most common sense motivational material that I'd heard in a long time. This is not a memo about art, it's a memo about commonsense living and the pursuit of success.

As a boy, when Des went fishing he only wanted to catch BIG fish. So what did he do? He'd only ever use a big hook. Now other people would use small hooks and catch small fish after small fish. However there were many times when Des returned home with nothing. But when Des caught something, it was always a BIG fish. He has since applies this principle when he is seeking potential buyers for his paintings around the world. When he decided to become an artist, he had no intention of becoming a starving artist. He has made a point of going where people will appreciate his paintings. This has required some risk and brazenness on his behalf, but as a result he has been able to chieve his goals and pursue his dreams.

Des spoke a lot about the power of visualisation. He was quick to tell me that he never worte anything down. Now for most of us motivational writers we would be taken aback by this. But the fact is that Des has so finetuned the art of visualisation that what he visualises really does happen. He designs events in his mind first and foremost. He lives out situations and expectations in his mind and in time he gets the opportunity to see these things worked out in reality. As an artist he has obviously hightened and finetuned his visual ability, but yet there is so much untapped power in our minds that we can use this principle to paint our own picture of success. As I have taught in many of my memos, what you think is what you are. Let me add to this. What you think is also what you get. Think success, reap success. Think possibility, reap opportunity.
